Questions
What is a good internet speed?
A 4K stream needs about 25 Mbps, so 100 Mbps comfortably covers a household of three or four people. For video calls and gaming, low ping (under 50 ms) and low jitter (under 15 ms) matter as much as raw speed.
What is the difference between Mbps and MBps?
Mbps means megabits per second and is how internet plans are sold. MBps means megabytes per second and is what file downloads usually show. One byte is eight bits, so 100 Mbps is about 12.5 MB/s.
Why do my speed test results change?
Wi-Fi signal, other devices using the connection, a VPN, your browser, the distance to the test server and the time of day all change the result. For the most reliable number, test over a cable with other downloads paused.
What is bufferbloat?
Bufferbloat is the extra lag you get when your connection is busy. Speedhound measures ping while it downloads and uploads, then grades the added delay from A+ to F. A bad grade means calls and games stutter when someone else is streaming or uploading.
How much data does the test use?
The test runs for a fixed time, so data use scales with your speed: roughly 175 MB at 100 Mbps and about 1.7 GB at 1 Gbps. Avoid running it on a metered mobile connection.
